LOS ANGELES AREA AIRPORTS
DURING THE GOLDEN AGE
If someone was "flying to Los Angeles" during the Golden Age, they needed to clarify exactly where. Below is an image I found at the terrific Web site called Abandoned & LIttle-Known Airfields (AA). The link to central Los Angeles displays this image, which was originally pubiished in a Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce brochure “Los Angeles County Spreads Her Wings, History of National Air Races, 1928.”
It pinpoints 55 airfields that were established and operating at the time. The Glendale Municipal Airport, which would become formally dedicated as the Grand Central Air Terminal (GCAT) in 1929, a year after this map was published, was number 22 at center in the upper third of the illustration.That said, some of the local, Los Angeles airfields specified as destinations by Register pilots are listed in the table, below, with links to further information about them. If there is no link, I haven't had time to write about it yet.
