TIMM C-165 "Collegiate" NC887E

NC887E was born in 1929 as a Timm C-165 “Collegiate,” S/N 102. It was powered by a 165 HP Comet 7-E engine, giving it its model number. It was a two-place, open cockpit, high wing monoplane. It is shown at left, courtesy of aerofiles.com.

At some point it was modified to a model C-185, powered by a 185 HP Curtiss Challenger engine. It flew during the 1930s and 1940s and became inactive at the beginning of the 1950s. Its airworthiness certificate was cancelled May 2, 1950. Likewise, its registration number was abandoned and reassigned to a 2002 RANS S-12.

The Timm was a popular trainer. NC887E can be found in our Register 34 times between December 14, 1930 and July 20, 1931. At the time of its landing, it was was owned by the Trojan Flying Club. It is logged in no other Registers.

The pilot was identified for only three of the flights. Tower Operator Anton Lygum recorded Clarence "Ace" Bragunier twice, on December 14, 1930 at 11:08AM, and on March 10, 1931. Victor Rechtsteiner was the third identified pilot who landed, also on December 14, 1930 at 11:43AM. The pilots of the other 31 landings were unidentified.

The fact that Bragunier and Rechtsteiner are logged in the Register so close together suggests that Bragunier, a veteran pilot and flight instructor, was giving a flying lesson to Rechtsteiner. I say this because Bragunier's pilot log book (#2 available for download at his link) contains many entries for 887E during December 1930. Some of those flights are notated "dual." Ten of the Register entries indicated a passenger was carried (unidentified each time), probably for dual instruction. It is probably safe to guess, too, that the majority of the 34 landings at GCAT were on behalf of training flights for the Trojan Flying Club.

The good news is this airframe still exists in restorable condition. According to the Ragwood Refactory Web site, NC887E exists today as a fuselage only, with numerous jigs and small parts with excellent plans. The remains belong today to a gentleman in Blythe, CA. I could find no timeline for its restoration. I have no other information about this airplane. If you can help fill in the blanks, please let me KNOW.
