TRAVEL AIR 6000 NC377M

NC377M is a Travel Air 6000, manufactured (serial number A6A-2003) during 1929 and powered with a 200 HP J-5 Whirlwind engine. It had accommodations for six in a heated cabin fitted with roll-down windows. About 25 of this model were built. Below, from the Golden Wings Museum, is a starboard profile of NC377M.

The livery above includes the logo of the National Air Tour that was run during 2003 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brother's first flight. NC377M was race number 24. Please follow the link for information about the other aircraft in the original and anniversary Tours. The "Sponsors" link at the site allows viewing of a movie that synthesizes old Air Tour footage with new. An interesting film to watch.

NC377M landed three times at the Grand Central Air Terminal (GCAT). The first landing was on Tuesday, April 14, 1931 at 5:19PM; the second at 11:43 the following morning. It appears from the Register data that it arrived on the 14th from San Francisco, CA and departed the next morning for same. The airplane belonged to Overland Airways. As is characteristic of the GCAT Register, the tower operator who kept the Register did not enter the pilot's name or that of the single passenger that arrived on Tuesday evening. The third landing was on Friday, July 3, 1931 at 8:09PM from San Fancisco. It departed at 9:27 PM, destination unidentified.

The good news, however, is that NC377M is still registered with the FAA and owned by a corporation in Wyoming. It currently is powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-985 series engine.

There is no information about this airplane at the Smithsonian. If you can help fill in the blanks for its chain of custody, please let me KNOW.
