WACO IDC NC133Y

NC133Y (S/N 3320) was signed in the Register of the Grand Central Air Terminal (GCAT) three times. The first visit was on Friday, March 27, 1931 at 11:15AM. It was flown, probably solo, by W.E. Miller. The owner was identified by tower Operator A.J. Lygum as "G.A. Vickman," but, from the information below, we know the owner was George Viehmann of Santa Maria, CA at that time. Miller departed at 12:43PM to an unidentified destination.

It was manufactured by the Waco Aircraft Company, Troy, OH and finished on September 2, 1930. The manufacturer's specifications as it came from the factory are below, courtesy of Andy Heins (cited, left sidebar). The airplane was modestly equipped with basic instrumentation. It was painted vermillion and silver. I have no photographs of NC133Y. If you can help with photos, please let me KNOW.

The second and third visits to GCAT were on April 1, 1931 at 9:48AM (lolo) and 12:46PM (one unidentified passenger). Lygum noted no other information in the Register, except that ownership had changed to the Kinner Motors Company. NC133Y also appeared once August 4 or 5, 1930 in the Parks Airport Register flown by Martie Bowman. Based at Los Angeles, CA, she was eastbound to Chicago, IL.

The chain of command for the airplane was relatively long, below. On September 23, 1930 it was delivered to the Troy Flying Service. Five weeks later it was in California owned by Mr. Viehmann. About two years later it was moved back east with Standard Flying Service in Newark, NJ.

It then went through at least eight more owners between 1934 and 1941. The Great Depression was hard on airplanes, since they exchanged hands so much among owners who perhaps discovered they couldn't afford them. Regardless, it remained in the northeast for the remainder of its recorded life.

I do not know what it was used for during WWII, if it was used at all. The final unidentified registration action was performed by the Civil Aeronautics Authority (CAA) in 1945.

Today registration 133Y is worn by a Beech E35 Bonanza operated by a cattle company in South Dakota.
