THE GRAND CENTRAL AIR TERMINAL REGISTER

is what this Web site is all about...

This Web site shares with you the stories behind handwritten entries made in a paper Register 80 years ago. You can view the Grand Central Air Terminal (GCAT) Register by year or page number with the dropdown menus below. I supplement your menu queries with information from a searchable database that mirrors the Register page images.

Then I guide you toward other interesting and relevant information via links, either internal to this site, or to external Web sites or other resources. There are millions of ways to work your way through this site. I encourage you to explore the GCAT stories via all the dropdown menus.

WHERE TO BEGIN?

You can enter the database in many different ways. By year is one way, which you can do with the dropdown menu below. You'll soon want to refine your searches by focusing particularly on one aspect of the database. For example, you may also search the Register by PEOPLE, AIRPLANES, PLACES and EVENTS. Click the buttons above right to explore those options.

To view records by year, click the drop down arrow and select the year. Click Go.

View the register by page number.

Take some time and reward yourself by investigating a few pilots and airplanes. As you read this today, this site is still under development. It probably never will be finished. That's why, as frustrating as it may sound, you may get different, and new, answers if you come here next week. Notice the "What's New on the Site?" button at the top and bottom of this page. Please bookmark that page, and come back to see what's new from time to time. The site changes almost weekly.

SOME OTHER DETAILS ABOUT THE REGISTER AND THE DATABASE

Your Webmaster’s copy of the Grand Central Air Terminal Register was acquired in 2009 through the Glendale (CA) Public Library and site visitor, author and friend, John Underwood. Thanks to them for arranging the acquisition of the copy.

Quantitatively, the register contains thousands* of records, which I transcribed into an online database. My database is mounted on the server, and it is the driver behind the drop down menus on the main pages that enable you to view pilot and airplane records. The database is essentially what makes this Web site work. Another way of saying that is this site is database-driven: each of your clicks on a drop down menu is fulfilled uniquely from the information in the database. Your pathway of exploration through my site will be uniquely different from the next visitor's pathway.

*NOTE: I temporarily use "thousands" for numbers on this page, because, as of the date of site upload below, the database entry for the Register is not complete. I have yet to scan and count the total number of pages. Likewise, there are two years so far represented in the dropdown menu: 1930 and 1931. The GCAT Register is HUGE. Please be patient. It will probably take me a couple of years to complete the data entry.

TECHNICAL DETAILS REGARDING THE REGISTER PAGE IMAGES

One of the key features of this Web site is you may view high-quality, black & white and color images of each of the thousands of pages of the Register. The page images have been optimized in PhotoShop for download speed and should not be a burden for most home computers or tablets operating at the upload date of this page. Typical time for page display is about 3 seconds.
