FORD 5-AT-B NC9638

Ford NC9638 at GCAT, Date Unknown (Source: Web)

This airplane was manufactured January 16, 1929. It wore S/N 5-AT-16, and sold originally to Maddux Airlines, who flew it as their fleet #9. It was operated by Maddux through 1931 when Maddux merged with Transcontinental Air Transport, which then merged to form Transcontinental & Western Air, Inc. (T.W.A.). T.W.A. flew from 1931-1934.

The photograph, left, is on a photo postcard mailed and postmarked August 22, 1932. Notice the covered canopy, just behind the starboard wing, leading across the ramp all the way to the airplane door. The message on the back of the card said, "Dear Dad, Just dropped down out of the clouds from airplane trip San Diego to L.A. Mother was the best sport possible. See you soon. Love Walter." It was addressed to Walter's father in West New Brighton, NY.

NC9638 appeared in the Grand Central Air Terminal (GCAT) Register at least six times between May and July, 1931. Its itinerary was generally back and forth from Glendale to Kansas City, MO. Only one of its pilots was identified by tower Operator A.J. Lygum. He was Lamar Nelson, who departed on Tuesday, May 26, 1931. He departed for Kansas City at 7:07AM.

NC9638 was issued an export license #E-1402 and it was exported to Colombia in May, 1935. In Colombia it was flown by Servicio Aereo Colombiano as registration number F-32. It was later (1939?) registered in Guatemala and assigned registration number LG-AAL.
