STEARMAN 4-D NC774H

This airplane was a Stearman Model 4-D, S/N 4011. It was signed in The Grand Central Air Terminal (GCAT) Register on Saturday, April 18, 1931 at 10:44AM. NC774H was owned and operated by T.W.A., Inc., but tower Operatory A.J. Lygum did not identify the solo pilot by name. Below, from the American Aviation Historical Society (AAHS) Journal, Summer, 1986, is a photograph of NC774H in Western Air Express livery. Western Air Express was one of the smaller airlines that merged to form T.W.A.

Another photograph of NC774H, below, shows it loading a sack of mail at San Diego. There are other photographs of Stearman aircraft at the link. The people were unidentified. NC774H was eventually converted to a 4-DM by addition of radio and night-flying equipment. The sign in the window of the miniature car says "U.S. Mail."

NC774H still exists in spirit inside the flying bones of another Model 4, NC796H (S/N 4025). NC796H was signed once in the Peterson Field Register, June 19, 1933. NC796H has been re-registered as NC774H and is flying today painted and numbered as in the photograph above. According to FAA records, the original NC774H was de-registered March 15, 1938. It had been owned by the Thompson Flying Service, Salt Lake City, UT. I do not know its fate.

NC774H appeared in no other Registers. Stearman built forty-one Model 4s.
