TRAVEL AIR NC5429

This airplane is a Travel Air Model 3000 (later converted to Model L-4000), S/N 518 manufactured during 1928. As of the upload date of this page, the airplane is still registered with the FAA to a private owner in Washington state. Its airworthiness certificate is current to February 29, 2020.

NC5429 left the factory with a Hispano-Suiza engine installed. I shared typical Travel Air characteristics including "elephant ear" ailerons, which can be seen in the photos below. With the "Hisso" engine, NC5426 was rated at 110MPH cruise speed and a 15,000 foot ceiling. At some point, NC5429 was fitted with a 220 HP Wright Whirlwind J-5 engine. This, with other accomodations, upgraded the airplane to the Model 4000. It appears as a Model 4000 in the photos below.

NC5429 appeared once in the Grand Central Air Terminal Register, on Sunday, June 7, 1931 at 2:43PM. The pilot was not identified by tower Operator Wright. One unidentified passenger was carried. No information regarding their point of origin or destination was noted. They remained on the ground until 3:56PM and, according to Wright's notation in the Register, "Took off against red flag."

Below, Whirlwind Travel Air NC5429 sits at the Grand Central Air Terminal (GCAT) as photographed on March 4, 1939. The pilot appears to be walking a small dog. The caption for the photograph states, "At Grand Central Air Terminal. 'Scottie' the dog often went along." The link suggests the airplane belonged to one "Doc" Hurst. Notice the photographer's shadow in the foreground hunched over the camera view finder.
