FOKKER F-10 NC4458

This large, trimotor airplane landed at least seven times at Glendale during 1930-31. It carried three 400HP Pratt & Whitney Wasp engines. It was a workhorse transport for TWA, Incorporated, which according to the Register, flew the Los Angeles to San Francisco, CA route. As with most of the landings at Grand Central, the tower operator did not identify the pilot by name, nor did he cite the number of passengers.

NC4458 was a Fokker F-10, serial number 1000, manufactured in the United States under license by the Atlantic Aircraft Corporation at Hasbrouck Heights, NJ. Published in Flight, a British magazine, December 13, 1928 is this article describing the features of the Fokker F-10 (PDF 553Kb). NC4458 is pictured nose-on and in left profile on the first page of this article. It wears Western Air Express (WAE) livery, indicating the photograph was taken before WAE merged with TWA. The article presents a 3-view of the F-10 on the second page, as well as dimensions and performance characteristics.

The airplane carried 12 passengers, 480 pounds of mail or freight and two pilots. The seating arrangement was also pictured at the download, above. The chairs were wicker with grey velour upholstery, and they did not recline. Neither did they appear to be anchored to the floor. It had a single lavatory. The airplane's top speed was 148MPH.

NC4458 is shown sitting on the ramp at Oakland (CA) Airport, date unidentified, but ca. early 1930s.
